About

Ramesh Pateria was an Indian sculptor whose dedication toward his craft was highly regarded not only in India, but also around the globe. Among his notable awards were the National Award, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi, 1969, and the Shikhar Award, Madhya Pradesh Government, 1982-83. He also won awards at the Gujarat State exhibition, Madhya Pradesh Kala Parishad at Kalidas Art Exhibition, Ujjain.

He became fascinated with marble carving from a very young age and would later study sculpture at Baroda University’s fine arts faculty. There he became a favorite student of Sankho Chaudhuri, a notable figure in India’s art scene. His work attracted attention and earned him scholarships in Madhya Pradesh State 1964-65, and Cultural Scholarship from Ministry of Education Govt. of India 1967-69.

For the next year, Ramesh shared his talent and knowledge to the children by teaching art at the Modern School, New Delhi.

But he did not stop shaping and perfecting his craft further. He secured British Council Scholarship to study Sculpture at the Portsmouth Polytechnic in U.K. during 1972-73 and painting at the Royal College of Art, London in 1973-74.

He was gradually regarded as a lunatic among the circles of artist, with a different personality and portrayal of self-image. But this uniqueness reflected on his creations. Upon returning to his country, he established himself as a first-class sculptor among his contemporaries. He became best known for his sculptures made in solid marble rock, with few works in woods. Despite spending two years on a foreign land, he did not let this experience diminish his originality. The Indian culture remained prominent on few of his works such as carved pieces that emit musical sound, which was inspired by Indian temple structures. He preferred the symmetrical lines than the decorative art, and preserved the natural lines of the marble to create bold abstract shapes with strong lines. His ingenuity and passion for his work won him many awards.

Ramesh Pateria passed away on 1987 at the age of 54. His sculptures can be viewed in the National Gallery of Modern Art, Lalit Kala Akademi and many other private and institutional collections.

This site was made in honor of his contribution to India’s art scene.
